Race for Life – Cancer awareness
Cancer Research UK Fundraising
I will be running Race for Life in Horsham on 1st June 2025 to raise money for Cancer Research.
My parents both died of Cancer in their 60’s so running each year gives us one day in the year to remember them whilst raising awareness of Cancer Research.
I ran Race for Life with my Mum before she died so I know she would be proud of us doing this for her.
Get Involved
I think it would be hard to find anyone who has not been affected by cancer, either directly or indirectly. The figures are astonishing, especially with young people so it is vitalling important research is carried out to find what is causing cancer and how best to treat it.
The Cancer Prevention- the WHO
Between 30% and 50% of cancer deaths could be prevented by modifying or avoiding key risk factors.
The cancer burden could be reduced through early detection of cancer and management of patients who develop cancer. Prevention also offers the most cost-effective long-term strategy for the control of cancer.
Adapting lifestyles to help prevent cancer:
- Avoid tobacco use, including cigarettes and smokeless tobacco
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables
- Exercise regularly
- Limit alcohol use
- Practice safe sex
- Reduce exposure to ultraviolet radiation
- Prevent unnecessary ionizing radiation exposure
- Avoid air pollution and indoor smoke from household use of solid fuels
- Get regular medical care
- Some chronic infections are also risk factors for cancer. People in low- and middle-income countries are more likely to develop cancer through chronic infections.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a subsidiary of the World Health Organization, ruled that processed meat causes colorectal cancer and red meat (e.g., beef, pork, lamb, goat) probably does.
Cancer Prevention –
The IARC is calling on Governments and bodies to support to their programe on cancer prevention.
The IARC Monographs Programme is an initiative to evaluate carcinogenicity of various agents such as environental exposures, chemicals and viruses.
The classifications will be used as a reference and guide for Governments and bodies in work to reduce cancer rates.
Cancer can start in any organ or tissue in the body when abnormal cells start to grow uncontrollably.
Metastasizing is when cancer spreads to other parts of the body and is a major cause of death.
Globally, cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer. The most common cancers in men are lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach and liver cancer.
In women the most common cancers are breast, colorectal, lung, cervical and thyroid cancers.
The burden of cancer is not just to families and individuals, the burden affects communities, businesses and health care systems both emotionally and financially.
Across the world the standards of Cancer health care varies greatly, while some countries are able to invest in state of the art cancer diagnosis and treating equipment, the poorer countries do not have the funds needed to treat people with Cancer.

Summary
Having lost my parents and friends to cancer and other family members, I will do everything I can to stay healthy and keep my family away from cancer causing chemicals and processed food.
A combination of fresh air, regular exercise, organic food and mindfulness to keep stress at bay.
Keeping away from excessive sugary foods and drinks such as alcohol, cakes, biscuits, pop and sweets, as Cancer loves sugar whilst keeping my stress levels to a minimum.
To keep raising awareness and raising money for Cancer Research UK.
